How to Market Beyond Social Media
With the advent of social media, much of our marketing time is spent promoting our businesses on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Reels, and every new platform that gains traction.
But with each update, it’s getting harder and harder to reach our customers, including those who follow us.
This is why it’s best to diversify the marketing channels you use. If you’re tired of putting so much effort into social media with little reward, or if you want to boost the effectiveness of your marketing efforts, take advantage of the channels listed below.

SEO
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps your website appear closer to the top of Google searches pertaining to what your business offers. Incorporating the appropriate keywords on your website is important, but so is claiming your Google Business profile and submitting your website to Google Search Console.
After all, the main goal of any marketing campaign is to get people to your website so they can buy your product. By taking advantage of SEO, you’ll get more potential customers landing on your website for free.
It also doesn’t take much to maintain SEO, the majority of the work is done up front. Learn more about SEO and how to boost traffic to your website.
E-newsletter
Email marketing is way more effective than social media. Your fans aren’t guaranteed to see your social media post, but they are guaranteed to receive your email. Whether they open it or not is up to them, but at least they see it!
In an email, you can include multiple photos and more text, which allows you to better connect with your audience. You can also have buttons and links that lead people to your products and services, also known as calls to action.
In Self-Employed School we emphasize a sustainable and effective marketing strategy that won’t dominate your days. There’s a lesson on content creation, which covers how to repurpose content across your blog, email, and social media posts.
Publicity
Publicity combines traditional and online marketing methods to skyrocket your business. Basically, publicity is getting your name and business mentioned in news articles, posts on industry websites, and even interviews on television and other shows.
So how do you get press? The easiest way is to write a press release for publication in your local newspaper. Yes, people still read newspapers! Be sure your promotion is news related, however, as newspapers won’t print press releases that are ad-sy in nature. Approved press release topics include opening a new business, receiving an award, and hosting an event.
Could you use some help? Module 6 of Self-Employed School covers press releases more in depth, including how to write one, as well as how to pitch guest posts to industry magazines or get featured.
