How the Rule of 7 Affects Your Marketing

In order to grow your business, you need to grow your customer base. To do that, you have to make people aware of your business and offers (which are your products/services). Promoting your business is called marketing, and there are abounding ways to market your business- many of which are free!

You can post on Facebook, optimize SEO on your website, advertise, and more. It can be discouraging when your efforts don’t instantly make your business take off, but keep in mind the Rule of 7.

Watch the Reel!

Not on Instagram?

The Rule of 7, originating from a study conducted in the 1930s, states that it takes an average of seven interactions with your business before a potential customer makes a purchase. Interactions could be seeing seven of your Facebook posts, or they can be a combination of social media posts, word of mouth, seeing an advertisement, etc.

Interaction types include:

  • Social media posts (each post counts as an interaction, even if someone saw the same post on multiple platforms!)

  • Ads (print, online, television, radio)

  • Website

  • Google Business listing/Google Maps

  • Blog post

  • Press release
    etc.

To take advantage of the Rule of 7, choose a variety of online and traditional marketing channels, and remember to stay consistent!

Marketing is a marathon, and it’s best to go slow and steady. It’s better to post on social media twice a week consistently than five times in one week, once the next, and three times the following week.

Consistent marketing not only keeps a steady message out there, but the dreaded social media algorithms are also more likely to show your posts to more people if you post consistently than sporadically. Frequency doesn’t always matter.

To take advantage of the Rule of 7, choose a variety of traditional and online marketing channels for variety, and remember to stay consistent.
